African Celebrations

In this performance-based workshop, students will use movement and song to explore the rich music culture that is unique to West Africa. Students will perform traditional folk songs and chants and use dance as a means of celebration, as a form of storytelling, and as an expression of unity. The class will also create polyrhythms, sing in 'call and response,' and play traditional West African instruments. The integral roles of musician and dancer will be explored, as well as the importance of 'active listening' in collective music-making will be discussed.
